About Set Notes
Set Notes was created to make the unwritten side of the Film & TV work easier to understand.
It is a practical resource for beginners trying to get into props, set dressing and the art department. The focus is on the kind of knowledge that actually helps you on set: how the departments fit into the bigger picture, what makes you useful and the habits and skills you need that will stop you showing up unprepared.
There's a lot about this industry that is learned the hard way and you likely won't find it being taught at film schools. Most of what gets you hired, keeps you working and moves you up in this world is learned on set. Usually through long days, good habits, asking the right questions and figuring things out as they go.
Set Notes is here to make some of that knowledge easier to find. Especially for students, entry level job seekers trying to find their footing.
Why it Exists
There's a gap between what people think film and TV work looks like and what the job is actually like day to day.
A lot of beginners come into the industry with enthusiasm, but not always with a clear understanding of how departments work, what is expected of them on set, or what makes someone genuinely useful to have around. The learning curve can feel steep at first, and you pick up most of your skills and ettiquete by diving in head first.
Set Notes was created to help close the gap. It's here to offer straightforward, practical advice for people who want to understand the work properly and take it seriously.
Where it's going
Set Notes begins with props, set dressing and how it all fits in to the art deparment because that is where its focus is strongest right now.
In time, the goal is to expand Set Notes to include other areas of production to build a broader resource around how behind-the-scenes work actually functions.
The intention is to grow slowly and keep the same approach throughout: practical, honest and grounded in the reality of the industry.
A lot of people want to work in Film and TV, but often don't know where to start. The industry can feel closed off, confusing and hard to read from the outside.
Set Notes is here to make the industry a little clearer by building a straightforward, useful resource.
